Newport News Public Schools

Mary KeelingMary Keeling, MSLS, EdS, is Supervisor of Library Media Services in Newport News, VA. As district supervisor, she has led the development and implementation of a district-wide inquiry process model. Prior to her work as an elementary school librarian, Mary worked in academic and museum libraries. She has served as president of her state school library association, chair of the AASL Supervisors Section, and on several AASL committees. She is an adjunct for Old Dominion University; has written and taught courses for AASL eCollab; and written for School Library Monthly, Knowledge Quest, and Library Media Connection. Currently, Mary writes a monthly column for School Library Connection and chairs AASL’s Implementation Task Force, charged with developing an implementation plan for launching AASL’s revised standards in 2017.

In her spare time, Mary sews and binge-reads mysteries, police procedurals, and some historical fiction. She got her start as a binge-reader in the fourth grade, when she read every horse book in the school library and then announced there was nothing left to read. She claims her nine years doing readers’ advisory in an elementary school was well-deserved karma.
